Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute: University of Washington

The need to recognize the issues caused by alcohol and drug abuse also caused the University of Washington to establish the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute, better known as ADAI. The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute was established in 1973 as part of the research center in the Warren G. Magnuson Health Sciences Center. Since its establishment the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute consistently conducts and supports the research of substance abuse at the University of Washington.

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the University of Washington has many activities dealing with the research of substance abuse including:

  • ADAI research which is run by their own research scientists. ADAI research is supported through federal and state means as well as other grants and contracts
  • Support of alcohol and drug related research at the University of Washington through a Small Grants Program.  ADAI awards more than 3 million dollars to researchers in 40 different University departments for around 350 projects. Many of the projects funded led to outside funding for the expansion of research.
  • Dissemination of research findings through the Library and Information Service, Clearinghouse, publications, and presentations by ADAI scientists, numerous website, news, blogs, newsletters, conferences, and symposia.

The alcohol and drug abuse institute gets its financial support from the State of Washing though state initiative 171. Initiative 171 states that a portion of the fees collected for certain liquor licenses must be given to the two state research Universities for Research on alcohol and drug abuse and dissemination of researching information. The University of Washington also provides additional money to this. Research studies are funded mainly through grants and contracts that are awarded by federal and state agencies as well as private foundations.

The point of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the University of Washington is to benefit the citizens of Washington State by expanding knowledge and information to social service professionals, health care professionals, policy makers, and the public. The staff within the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the University of Washington work to always improve the understanding and reduce the harm that is so obviously caused by alcohol and drug abuse.

Right now the ADAI has many current projects that range from alcohol use and its consequences to mindfulness based relapse prevention all the way to alcohol’s effects on a women’s decision-making. Project categories at the ADAI at the University of Washington include:

  • American Indians/Alaska Natives
  • Behavioral Risk

  • Clinical and Health Services
  • Epidemiology and Drug Abuse Trends
  • Prescription Drug Abuse
  • Prevention Research
  • Sexual Behavior and HIV Risk
  • Tobacco Cessation
  • Training, Information Services and Technology Transfer

The ADAI is continually searching for more information about alcohol and drug abuse not only within its own state of Washington but across the country and the Pacific Northwest. The ADAI makes comparisons, looks at the efficiency, statistics and so much more to find out more and more information than we already know about the disease of addiction and alcoholism.
